Last Friday, thousands of African migrants tried to climb a 20 foot fence that separates northern Morocco from Spain. The Spanish border authorities responded with remarkable levels of violence and brutality, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 migrants and raising the question, why exactly are these borders worth defending?
In San Antonio earlier this week, a truck carrying migrants across the US-Mexico border was abandoned in the Texas heat, resulting in 51 deaths and renewed calls for action on our southern border. But borders, much like laws, are only as real as we allow them to be. Speed limits are really suggestions, stop signs are recommendations, and borders are arbitrary lines drawn on maps, usually by people with no sympathy or understanding of why border enforcement is inherently violent. Migrants fleeing their home countries in desperation should never be subject to the brutality of border gestapo, but taking in refugees only seems to be popular when they’re fleeing countries like Ukraine. Indeed Spain just established an ‘express system’ to accommodate Ukrainian refugees without having to request official protection.
“A democratic state with the rule of law cannot allow its borders – which in this case are EU borders – to be violently attacked. Nor can it allow its public servants in the Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional, who provide the necessary space for all of us to be able to exercise our rights and freedoms, to be assaulted.”
