Wednesday, July 6: After A Massacre
Details continue to emerge about the Highland Park shooter and the victims
As the tragedy in Highland Park continues to be investigated, new information is coming to light about the shooter’s troubling history and the continued ineffectiveness of the gun laws in this country. The shooter (whose name isn’t worthy of being repeated) apparently displayed worrying behavior and threatened violence in the past. His parents confiscated knives and other weapons from him after he threatened to “kill everyone”, yet his father also allowed him to buy multiple firearms. At some point parents have to be held accountable for helping
Schools, churches, mosques, synagogues, super markets, movie theaters, and now parades. No place in this country is safe from the epidemic of guns. An unaccompanied child found wandering the parade area during the shooting was discovered to have lost both parents in the massacre. This child will have to be raised by someone else, someone also touched by gun violence, even if indirectly. At this point, ask any random passerby in the street and it’s likely gun violence has shaped their lives in one way or another. A country with more guns than people, where mass shootings are as commonplace as changes in the forecast. This is the kind of country being celebrated on the 4th.
