Tuesday, September 6: Accountability is An Empty Word for the Powerless
It's rare that admitting to murder doesn't equal admitting guilt
Imagine growing up with no accountability. As a child, your parents never said no, they caved to every desire and passing whim you asked for. You were never criticized, never told to apologize, never made to feel that you’d done anything wrong. Any conflicts you faced, any fights, arguments, or disagreements were always categorically the other person’s fault. Growing up in this environment, you’d never learn to feel sympathy or guilt when things were in fact your fault. You’d always be sure to forgive yourself first and when faced with the consequences of your actions, absolve yourself from any wrongdoing.
So,
Israel finally admitted to killing Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, in a turn of events that changes nothing, surprises no one, and brings accountability nowhere. The murderer’s official statement claims Abu Akleh was “accidentally hit by IDF gunfire fired toward suspects identified as armed Palestinian gunmen during an exchange of fire”. The military has made clear they have no intention of prosecuting any of the soldiers involved or pursuing any kind of criminal charges.
The murderer’s explanation doesn’t align with video evidence of the murderous encounter, which shows there was no active combat, nor any Palestinian militants for that matter, near Abu Akleh in the moments leading up to her death. Footage obtained by big corporate outfits like CNN, corroborated by testimony from eight (8) eyewitnesses, an audio forensic analyst and an explosive weapons expert, suggests that Israeli forces intentionally took aim at Abu Akleh.
The response from the Abu Akleh family recognizes that there can be no sympathy from an oppressor with no remorse. The child raised with no accountability grew into a monster that takes no blame or responsibility. Shocking.
