Fyre Fest 2.0: There are some absolutely wild headlines coming out of the Nevada desert this weekend, as is customary when the wealthy white technocrats descend upon Black Rock City for the annual Burning Man “self-reliance” gathering. 70,000 people were/are trapped in the remote Nevada desert by flash floods, literally stuck in the mud with little hope of being rescued. Now the “self-reliance” gurus will be forced to trek several miles through the mud to hitch a ride with a benevolent stranger. Bit ironic that some of the people who spend their lives hoarding wealth and chiding the rest of the world for wasting their money and resources are now forced to ration food and water because they just couldn’t stay out of the desert. Unfortunately for those poor souls, I’m all out of sympathy
Eritreans in Israel: A day after bloody protests by rival groups of Eritreans in south Tel Aviv left dozens of people injured, the leader of the apartheid nation has called for their immediate deportation. Supporters and opponents of Eritrea’s government faced off in the Tel Aviv streets, using construction lumber, pieces of metal and rocks as weapons, smashing shop windows and cop cars. Apartheid-defending Israeli police in riot gear shot tear gas, stun grenades and even live rounds at the protesters. About 25,000 African migrants live in Israel, mostly from Sudan and Eritrea, who fled conflict or repression and arrived in Israel seeking asylum. Israel recognizes very few as asylum seekers, seeing them overwhelmingly as economic migrants, and claims it has no legal obligation to keep them. The apartheid-lovers have tried several tactics to force migrants out, including sending some to a remote prison, holding part of their wages until after they agree to leave the country, or offering cash payments to those who agree to move to another country, somewhere in Africa. Critics accuse the government of trying to coerce the migrants into leaving, which sounds like exactly what’s happening
After a Shooting: Students at UNC Chapel Hill are demanding substantial and immediate improvements to the university’s active shooter response protocol that campus leaders claim was a success. In the aftermath of an on-campus murder, many students are criticizing the school’s communication, preparedness and staff response. Despite the university’s confidence in its response, students say their teachers were unprepared and many grew more panicked in the absence of detailed information. Unfortunately there’s really no perfect way to respond to a school shooting, it’s just chaos and confusion in the worst way
