Sunday, July 17: Wildfires in Europe
Things are really heating up for our family across the pond
Firefighting crews have been working overtime this summer as much of Europe sees higher than average temperatures. Crews in Spain, Portugal, France and Greece have helped thousands of people evacuate their homes and battled blazes that have covered tens of thousands of acres. The fires are fueled by the ongoing heat wave pushing average temperatures this week well past 100°F. While here in the US we’ve grown accustomed to raging wildfires every summer, many of our European brethren (& sisthren?) are not culturally used to battling such blazing heat. Workers in Britain are spreading sand on roads to make sure they don’t melt, and railway workers are advising travelers to be cautious, as the rails themselves can buckle or burst in the heat. The highest temperature on record in Britain was 38.7°C in July 2019. Forecasts suggest that the coming week will have multiple days when Britain will face new record highs.
