Sunday, July 10: Lessons From Sri Lanka
Sometimes getting rid of a politician means entering their home uninvited
As previously reported, Sri Lankans have been demonstrating for weeks against their current government administration amid fuel shortages and on the verge of economic collapse. Yesterday, thousands of citizens decided enough was enough and stormed the presidential palace, sending the president scurrying for safety. I’ll never grow tired of seeing images of everyday people enjoying the excesses that politicians take for granted. Of course the president has agreed to resign, given the lack of alternative options, and the future of the country may be unclear, but for one day the people were able to demonstrate their anger at a system designed to keep them poor and exploited. Sadly, the closest equivalent we’re likely to see in the United States took place last January 6.
Say what you will about the far right, but when it comes to demonstrating their beliefs they’re (mostly) organized, (fanatically) committed, and (not) intelligent. This dangerous combination allows them to set aside minor ideological differences and focus on working together to achieve shared goals; namely the extermination of alternative ways of life.
