Things I Enjoyed
I really enjoyed this story about a family of Taiwanese immigrants and their quest to find common interests in their new home. I liked that the story doesn’t paint the picture of a perfect immigrant family, living and learning together, but rather depicts the challenges of long distance parenting and what a parent’s love can look like from thousands of miles away
This in-depth analysis of pickleball, the new sport that older Americans can’t get enough of, and the injuries that often come with it. I’ve seen a few groups play pickleball in the past, and it generally seems to cater to an older audience, but the tenacity of the players always surprises me. You’ll see grandmothers and great grandmothers toss their walkers aside and limber up at the first mention of pickleball. But the linked story details how some of these folks aren’t doing enough stretching before engaging in this rigorous workout
This masterpiece, testing the limits of human imagination
Things I Didn’t Enjoy
This story focuses on gun violence in New Orleans and the role it plays on the black community. It can be a difficult read, but ultimately it’s well-written and paints a clear picture of the continued trauma in the community
This detailed reconstruction of a police shooting from 2018 in Chicago only further contributes to my belief that Chicago police serve no real purpose other than to terrorize and persecute members of the local community. By providing footage from the illegal shooting as well as the moments after, as police stand around formulating their narrative, we can better understand how the lies surrounding police killings take shape
This article, which seeks to blame asylum-seekers and migrants for the tattered social safety net this country provides. The author somehow tries to blame the most vulnerable among us for the shortcomings of those in power, claiming that the influx of migrants is “testing New York’s reputation as a world sanctuary”. Not mentioned was the decision to sacrifice funding for social services in order to increase the police budget
