Saturday, September 24: Italian Elections
When girl-bossing meets the far right, Mamma Mia does it get bad
Italy is holding elections tomorrow, and Giorgia Meloni could make history as the first female Italian head of state. But before we start high-fiving and celebrating her trailblazing feminist victory, it’s important to recognize that Meloni (no clear relation to Law & Order star Christopher Meloni) has some problematic political opinions. She has been a member of the Italian Parliament for almost two decades and was previously a minister in a past government.
Meloni’s credentials and experience are less of an issue than her beliefs. She’s a classic anti-immigrant nationalist, the kind of politician to talk about increasing child-care services solely in hopes of boosting the Italian birthrate to keep immigrants as a demographic minority, basic replacement theory. She promotes the inherent greatness of Italians while positioning herself with a coalition that could make it harder for women to have abortions in a country where the procedure has been legal since 1978 but is still very difficult to obtain.
“It’s not a gain at all and, indeed, a possible setback from the point of view of women’s rights.”
-Giorgia Serughetti, professor of political philosophy at Bicocca University in Milan
The next days, weeks, and months will determine what kind of leader Italians deserve, and in turn what direction the country is headed. It’s more than likely that leader will be Meloni, stay tuned to find out what kind of trouble she makes.
