Turkey and the United Nations helped broker a key deal between Ukraine and Russia, lifting Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian ports and working to export millions of pounds of grain in the midst of the ongoing war. This agreement was crucial not just for the sake of the two countries, but for the dozens of nations around the world that rely on Ukrainian grain to avoid food crisis. There are more than 20 million tons of grain trapped in Black Sea ports, impossible to export and unlikely to see their intended destination.
No sooner had this agreement been reached then Russia bombed the port city of Odessa, threatening to undermine any agreements between the warring nations. The coming days will illustrate whether or not the deal will hold, but it’s important to remember that any repercussions will be felt far beyond Russia and Ukraine’s borders.
