Saturday, July 22: Texas Hits a New Low
That man Greg Abbott needs to be rolled down a steep hill with no brakes
Just when you think they’ve hit rock bottom, the people in power down in Texas dig a little deeper and find a new depth to drop to. Like the long-forgotten Titanic submersible, the policies of governor Greg Abbott are sinking his state and will (hopefully) result in its eventual implosion.
Texas began rolling out what is set to become a new floating barrier on the Rio Grande yesterday in the latest escalation of Abbott’s multibillion-dollar effort to “secure the US border with Mexico” (keep desperate migrants from crossing into Texas). Abbott’s efforts already include bussing migrants to liberal states and cities like Chicago and authorizing the National Guard to make arrests. Now the governor has turned to installing barriers in the river to force migrants back or kill them in the process.
Even before these huge, orange buoys were unloaded from the tractor trailers that hauled them to the border city of Eagle Pass, there were concerns raised over Abbott’s unprecedented challenge to the federal government’s authority over immigration enforcement. Migrant advocates and humanitarian and environmental groups have voiced concerns about the drowning risks that these buoys pose as well as the potential impact on the river.
Earlier iterations of Abbott’s border policy have included laying down miles of razor wire at popular crossing points on the river to prevent people from crossing into Texas. Heaven should implement a similar policy for people like Greg Abbott. Lay down a few miles of razor wire at the pearly gates, because this man should be rolled straight into the depths of Hades.

Messi Introduction: The greatest soccer player in history capped off his MLS debut yesterday by scoring a stoppage-time winning free kick in front of a sold-out crowd that included LeBron James and Serena Williams. Messi, dressed entirely in pink like some sort of legendary soccer-playing flamingo, stepped onto the field as a substitute and proceeded to guide his team to a valuable victory. Let it not be overlooked that his teammates are mostly below-average professional players and his team currently sits at the bottom of their conference standings. If Messi can turn this project into a success, it might be his greatest achievement to date
Definitely Not Racist: Texas A&M University announced yesterday the resignation of its president Katherine Banks in the fallout over a Black journalist who was hired to lead their journalism school. Just last month A&M had hired professor Kathleen McElroy to help revive the school’s journalism department. McElroy is a former New York Times editor, but the hiring celebration quickly unraveled due to pushback over her past work promoting diversity. President Katherine Banks said in her resignation letter that she was retiring immediately because “negative press has become a distraction”
