Guy walks into a bar, he overhears a discussion taking place about ways to get around Roe v. Wade for women seeking abortions (it’s a really progressive bar). Patrons chime in with their ideas; “Put abortion clinics on federal land!”, “What if we put abortion clinics on cruises and operated using maritime law?”, “What about national parks?? Imagine, the Grand Canyon National Abortion Clinic! That might take away from the aesthetic though.”
At this last suggestion the bar erupted in laughter, and it finally became clear to the guy, these people aren’t interested in practical solutions, they’ve already given up. These were the jokes and ideas of a people without hope for improvement in their circumstances. The smugness and arrogance that this issue wouldn’t affect them, the carelessness for the people hurt and filled with fear, and the apathy and resignation that it’s out of our control now. I understand feeling disappointed and the tendency to pivot to humor in our discomfort is common, but the smugness has got to go.
