Saturday, August 6: Trouble in Israel
When all else fails, attacking Palestine is always popular
Returning back to the regularly scheduled violence, Israel killed at least 11 Palestinians yesterday as it conducted airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. Sadly, the term “like shooting fish in a barrel” comes to mind, considering the vast majority of these Palestinians have no means of escaping or avoiding these attacks in the heavily-blockaded area. With Israel’s government stuck in a political crisis that will have voters electing representatives for the fifth time in less than four years, the past few days have seen an uptick in violence as Israeli officials try to win back popular support. Because as we all know, the healthiest sign for “the only democracy in the Middle East” is annual elections resulting in ineffective leadership.
Israeli reports claim the targets of the violence this time are members of “Islamic Jihad” a small organization with financial backing from Iran. Most headlines reporting this week’s violence will mention that one of the 11 victims in the airstrikes was indeed a senior member of the organization. What most headlines will fail to report is that the other 10 victims were innocent bystanders, including a five-year-old girl. Because when indiscriminately bombing a densely-populated area, there will always be civilian casualties.
