Monday, October 9: Unhinged Reactions
Sometimes, oftentimes, being silent is better than being stupid
In the ongoing fallout of the recent Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation and apartheid, people around the world are showing their true colors in their reactions. Sadly, many of those reactions are remarkably uninformed and some go so far as to sound downright genocidal.
For instance, the defense minister of apartheid Israel Yoav Gallant has called for a complete and total blockade on the 2 million residents of Gaza, saying, “We are putting a complete siege on Gaza … No electricity, no food, no water, no gas – it’s all closed. We are fighting human animals and we act accordingly.” Language like this wouldn’t sound out of place in Germany circa 1938, but because the recipients of this hatred are Palestinian, there will be no international admonishment or outrage. Additionally, the fact that Israel can choose to cut off electricity to Gaza at any moment is a pretty good primer about the conditions in Palestine that led to the resistance in the first place.
Here are a few other examples of reactions that illustrate the level of ignorance and the deception of propaganda being devoured by most of the western world:
Jamie Lee Curtis, everyone’s favorite mother from Freaky Friday, shared an image on Instagram of terrified children looking skyward alongside an emoji of the Israeli flag, captioning her post, “terror from the skies”. Sadly, Jamie Lee didn’t realize that the children in this image are Palestinians in northern Gaza, and the terror from the skies she refers to is courtesy of the Israeli military
Kyle Kuzma, the semi-talented professional basketball player, tweeted out, “We definitely need to take a look at our foreign policy moving forward!!!” a statement so vague I honestly can’t be sure what he’s advocating for. A generous interpretation would suggest Kuzma thinks it’s time to reconsider America’s relationship with the apartheid state, but there’s no indication that Kuz is expressing sympathy or support for the Palestinian cause
Joseph Robinette Biden, our geriatric leader, expressed his unwavering support for the apartheid settler colonizers, saying, "Israel has a right to defend itself and its people - full stop. Let me say this as clearly as I can. This is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage. The world is watching."
Meanwhile, as clueless politicians and celebrities quibble over what propaganda to believe or promote, Gazans are under direct fire with dozens dying every hour. The Israeli military is dropping white phosphorus bombs (again) on densely populated civilian residential areas in Gaza. Innocent Palestinian civilians, including children, are being brutally massacred in Israeli airstrikes targeting the neighborhoods and refugee camps north of the Gaza Strip. And as Biden said, the entire world isn’t just watching, the western world is advocating for this continued destruction.
Side Items
Afghan Earthquake: A powerful earthquakes killed at least 2,000 people in Afghanistan this weekend. Entire villages were flattened, with hundreds of people trapped under collapsed houses and many still waiting for help from people without machinery or even shovels to dig out relatives and search for survivors. Living and dead, victims were trapped under rubble, their faces grey with dust. A government spokesman said yesterday that hundreds are still trapped, with more than 1,000 hurt and over 1,300 homes destroyed
Liverpool Matchweek 8: In light of the incredibly serious global events unfolding, I don’t have it in me to film and post a silly video breaking down Liverpool’s game this weekend. The Reds traveled to Brighton & Hove Albion and earned a 2-2 draw yesterday. They started slow and gave up the opening goal (yet again), before Mohammed Salah scored twice to give Liverpool a lead. Sadly it was a lead they couldn’t hold onto, as they gave up a late equalizer and walked away with a point each. Liverpool currently sit fourth in the league, just 3 points behind league leaders Tottenham and Arsenal
