Monday, October 10: 1 Month Til Election Day
Are we really about to have a senator named Herschel? What is this, 1912??
With one month to go before the midterm elections, there are still idiots out there paying attention to political polls. Having worked in polling at one point (I’m not proud, just honest), I can honestly tell you that the field is rife with statistical errors and assumptions about human behavior. There are also plenty of opportunistic pollers out there, trying their best to fabricate a lead for their preferred candidate.
Moral of this story; Never trust a political poll.
With that in mind, there are a few races that have caught my attention, whether by choice or otherwise. In these instances it’s clear that republicans aren’t particular about who spouts their message or whether they actually believe what they’re campaigning on. The trickle-down Trump effect means the biggest name/celebrity that will defend republican ‘values’ will get the nomination. This is how we wind up in a position where Herschel Walker, a former football player with apparent brain damage and Dr. Oz, a guy who mostly plays a doctor on TV, are both serious contenders to join the US Senate.
There are people and outlets who will tell you that it’s your civic duty to keep these dangerous people out of power and how your vote is the most important way you can contribute. Personally, I don’t much believe in the value of elections that are rigged from the moment the district maps are drawn. But I also recognize that our most powerful tool for participating and contributing in this society is our voice, not our vote.
