Monday, July 1: Descent Into Absurdity
This election season will be particularly tough to witness
Last week gave us a quick glimpse of our horrifying future, with the first presidential debate of this election cycle taking place. Putting Donny Trump and Joey Biden on a stage together was pretty much exactly as bad as anyone paying attention would've predicted. Biden appeared listless and frail, completely lost and unprepared, while Trump displayed his typical lying and moronic antics. The two geriatrics spent time arguing about abortion, immigration, and of course their respective golf abilities as the rest of the nation watched on.
It’s a pretty clear sign that things are going poorly when outlets like The New Yorker are publishing articles about Biden’s obvious lack of ability. The article in question goes so far as saying, “For the President to insist on remaining the Democratic candidate would be an act not only of self-delusion but of national endangerment.” That presidential fossil is doing exactly what Ruth Bader Ginsberg did a few years back, desperately clinging to his power out of some strange, unearned sense that it’s his lifetime achievement award. Biden and everyone around him are actively ignoring his visible cognitive decline, and ignoring how it directly endangers the millions of people he’s supposedly serving. As a result, we’re all stuck in a two-party system that consistently spits out the oldest, least likable, and ultimately most useless candidates possible.
The public criticism in the aftermath of the debate was so bad that they had to call in the big guns. The Obamanator himself checked back in online, reminding us all that a better world is not, in fact, possible, or even worth fighting for. The interesting thing about Obama’s ill-timed interventions is that they always try to prevent conflict in the present, thereby leading to greater conflict in the future. If there’s one thing we can say about the former president, he always has the worst timing imaginable.
At one point during the debate, Trump literally referred to Biden as a Palestinian, wielding the nationality as an insult of course. The word “Palestinian” was used derogatorily by Trump during a televised debate and it barely even registered or made a ripple. This should tell you everything you need to know about the level of dehumanization Palestinians are witnessing as they continue to be killed en masse. It also should be clear evidence that the so-called media experts moderating these debates are nothing more than Andy Cohen wannabe’s, sitting in the midst of reality TV stars, stirring up juicy gossip and controversy at every opportunity.
While much of the US was focused on two old white men bumbling on stage, the genocide in Gaza approaches its ninth month. Last week, top UN officials told the apartheid state of Israel that they will be forced to suspend aid operations across Gaza unless urgent steps are taken to better protect humanitarian workers. This comes after the apartheid state has already mercilessly targeted over a hundred UN workers. The useless pier built by the US military to supposedly bring aid into Gaza has now been removed entirely due to “issues with the weather”, and the military is unlikely to re-install it. So in the end, this pier stunt was nothing more than a tool to launch more genocidal attacks from.
Meanwhile the supreme court in the apartheid state recently and unanimously ruled that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men for compulsory genocidal service. This landmark decision could result in the collapse of the already fragile Netanyahu governing coalition as the apartheid state’s public image and reputation continue to plummet.
In a rare piece of good news, the apartheid state finally released the director of Gaza’s main hospital earlier today, after holding him for seven months without charge or trial over absurd allegations that Al-Shifa Hospital was used as a “Hamas command center”. The release of Dr. Mohammed Abu Selmia was bittersweet, as it was only done in order to free up additional space in the overcrowded and abusive Israeli detention centers. Abu Selmia said that he and other detainees were held under harsh conditions and tortured, allegations that match many other accounts of Palestinians who’ve been held in the custody of the ruthless apartheid state.
Side Items
Free Assange: Julian Assange, the whistleblowing journalist and enemy of the US government, entered a plea deal with his enemies last week that will free him and resolve the legal case over the publication of a bunch of ‘classified documents’. Assange headed to a US commonwealth island in the Pacific last week to enter his guilty plea relating to an Espionage Act charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified national defense information. By now he’s returned to Australia, his home country, after his plea and sentencing. The long-awaited hearing will take place in the Pacific island of Saipan because of Assange’s understandable reluctance to the idea of traveling to the continental US and being covertly murdered. Just thirteen-and-a-half years and two extradition requests after he was first arrested, Assange is finally headed home
Sayonara Oversight: Last week the supreme court chose to break from tradition and upend a 40-year-old decision that made it easier for the federal government to regulate the environment, public health, workplace safety and consumer protections. By overturning the critical Chevron decision, the court delivers a potentially devastating victory to “business interests” aka greedy capitalists hell-bent on making this planet entirely uninhabitable for the sake of a few extra dollars.
