The house of representatives reached a bipartisan agreement yesterday to increase funding for local police departments. After everything that’s happened in the past two years and change, from marching and demanding to defund the police after George Floyd’s murder, to burning down a police precinct in Minnesota, democrats and republicans really came together and said, “Actually, we need more pork in here.”
A bipartisan majority voted overwhelmingly, 360 to 64, in favor of the four-bill package, called the “Invest to Protect Act", which is already a lie. If you want to invest in protecting your community, try building more affordable housing, or maybe invest in the local schools, or perhaps install a public park, or at the very least you could try funding groups that prioritize keeping the subjects they engage alive. Any one of these tactics would be more effective than the reality. Instead politicians across the political spectrum decided to give $60,000,000 a year for five years to local police departments. These funds could be used to purchase body cameras or conduct de-escalation training, but in all likelihood they’ll be used to pay out the families of victims killed by police misconduct and ineptitude.
Case in point, earlier this week, Chicago’s city council approved a $15 million settlement with the estate of a woman killed in a crash with a Chicago Police Department squad car during a police chase in 2020. Making matters worse, the police hold no responsibility for the death, instead charging the driver they were chasing with the murder.
