Biden stopped by for a visit at a hospital in Jerusalem that serves Palestinian patients. It’s important to provide the context that these patients are generally critical cases, and the reason they can’t be treated in Palestine is due to an Israeli blockade preventing both medical equipment and professionals from moving freely between the two nations. The blockade started fifteen years ago and has been staunchly upheld since, with the difference in the quality of care used as something of a hostage against unruly Palestinians. There have been countless headlines and stories that make mention of Israel generously providing care for a Palestinian child who requires special treatment. Time and again, these stories fail to highlight the impact that a blockade has on a society’s ability to care for itself.
To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Biden brought up his Irish heritage, comparing the Palestinian abuse to the mistreatment of the Irish under British rule (as a rule, avoid mentioning your heritage and the struggles of your ancestors when choosing to visit a completely unrelated area, particularly when said area is an unapologetic apartheid state). The president chose to share a verse from Irish poet Seamus “Don’t call me Finnegan” Heaney, “The Cure of Troy”:
History says, Don’t hope
On this side of the grave,
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme
