Fresh off the election of environmental advocate Lula Da Silva, the Brazilian navy is now looking for new ways to destroy the planet. Sinking an asbestos-laden aircraft carrier to the ocean floor would certainly be breaking new ground.
Apparently there’s a Brazilian decommissioned aircraft carrier, The São Paulo, that is just jam-packed with an undetermined amount of asbestos. The Clemenceau-class carrier is currently being towed in circles off the coast of Brazil after it was refused permission to dock in Turkey for recycling. Evidently no government wants anything to do with it, which can’t really come as a huge surprise.
Now, the Brazilian Navy says it plans to just sink the ship, which was purchased from France in 2000 for $12 million (reminder: nothing good comes from France). The 873-foot giant served as part of the French navy under the name Foch from 1963 until it was sold to Brazil in 2000. Environmentalists say sinking the ship would cause irreparable environmental damage and could be a violation of international law. I’m no environmental expert, but I’m willing to bet that aquatic life wouldn’t respond to asbestos much better than we do.

Black History Cruiser(s): It was always going to come to this. Police departments in Miami and Ohio have unveiled their newest Black History Month celebratory token; a fully decked-out police cruiser with sporadicly strewn random African decals and logos plastered all over it. The Miami police car was so atrocious that Columbus, Ohio almost snuck under the radar with “History 1”, their newest police wagon fully fitted with red, yellow and green racing stripes and an MLK quote on the back window, presumably preventing curious onlookers from seeing the bleeding suspects in the back of the car
Youngboy In Utah: Interesting read on YoungBoy Never Broke Again, your teenage cousin’s favorite rapper, and how he’s spending his time on house arrest in Salt Lake City, UT. As someone who thinks of his rage music largely as meme material, it’s fascinating to consider the real human being hiding inside the artist
More Like Ilhan “No-Mar”: republican members of the house voted yesterday to oust democratic rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, citing her alleged anti-Israel comments, when she justifiably criticized the apartheid state. It’s a predictable tit-for-tat response to democrats last session booting far-right lawmakers over their continued outrageous remarks. Of course the democratic leader Mr. Hakeem Jeffries, who would be defending Omar in theory, instead said that Omar has at times “made mistakes” and used antisemitic tropes that were condemned by other members.
