It’s possible I overestimated exactly how much this empire deserves to be mourned.
When I started writing this newsletter it was to comment on weird news stories and poke fun at the absurdity of our political leaders and their incompetence. Back when we could find humor in joking about the decline of the western empire. But we’ve undoubtedly reached a point where there’s nothing funny about the casual evil and murderous ineptitude of the people leading this country.
One of the hardest parts of writing for me is knowing when to quit. I realized a few months ago that I was doing irreversible damage to my mental health by continuing to seek out and consume footage that was having a remarkably negative impact on my psychological state. After many conversations with a mental health professional (shoutout to therapy), I believe it’s time to bring this newsletter to a close, at least in its present format, at least for the time being. As much as I want to continue sharing my writing, this particular avenue has exhausted me to a point beyond hopelessness.
There’s something to be said about our willingness to continually engage and grapple with the ongoing genocide in Gaza during an election year that features two historically unpopular candidates, all while our planet’s climate collapses around us. It all might sound a bit Chicken Little-y, but dammit that little guy was making some good points! To be comfortable in this day and age is a clear sign of either a concerning lack of awareness or complete and willful delusion. But writing this newsletter everyday has taught me that empathy has a limit beyond which self-destruction is unavoidable.
I want to continue elevating the stories and raising awareness about the atrocities happening on the ground in Gaza. I realize at this point I’m beating my head into a wall trying to change anyone’s mind; you’re either already disgusted by the ongoing genocide or you’ve sacrificed any semblance of humanity for the sake of supporting the murder of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians. Our political representatives are making no effort to bring an end to the bloodshed, on the contrary they’re the primary supporters of continuing and attempting to justify these war crimes. Any one of them who makes a statement in support of Palestine is censured and criticized endlessly, labeled as a terrorist sympathizer.
With all that in mind, it’s important for me to thank you, dear reader, for joining me on this journey and making the effort to continue learning when so many people have resigned themselves to swallowing the propaganda of an apartheid state without question. If this newsletter ever brought you a smile, or made you question the narratives or motives of western media, then I’ll consider my work successful. I’m sure I’ll be sharing more writing in due time, because you can never keep a good man down and as my teachers would often tell me, I really never know when to shut up. Whatever project comes next for me, be certain that you’ll be informed.
Any good that came from reading this newsletter is thanks only to the Most High, and any faults have been solely my own, but I apologize for nothing. At the end of the day, I hope you’ll remember this newsletter not as a constant downer that fixated on the negative things happening around the world, but as a daily reminder that even though the world can be a scary place, we don’t have to go through it alone.
I love you and love your sincerity
